Droupadi Murmu: Who is She?

Droupadi Murmu is the current President of India, serving as the 15th President. She hails from a remote village in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, and comes from a humble background. Before stepping into the realm of politics, she dedicated her efforts as an assistant educator and junior associate within the Odisha State Irrigation Department.Her political journey began in 1997 with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where she worked as a councillor in Rairangpur. Later, she became the President of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha in the BJP’s Odisha unit.

Droupadi Murmu has achieved several milestones in her political career. She achieved the honor of being elected two times to the Odisha State Legislative Assembly under the banner of the BJP. During 2002-2004, she served as a Cabinet Minister in the BJD-BJP coalition government and earned the title of Best Legislative Member. Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of her husband and two elder sons, she remained resilient and strong in her public life.

Notably, Droupadi Murmu created history by becoming the first woman to assume the office of governor of Jharkhand, a tribal governor of India, and a woman from Odisha. Her family consists of her son-in-law Ganesh Hembram, a rugby player, and her daughter Itishree Murmu, a bank employee.

Biography of Droupadi Murmu :

On June 28, 1958, Droupadi Murmu was born. She was born in a Santhal native community in the Odisha village of Uparbeda, Mayurbhanj. Under the Panchayati Raj system, her father and grandfather were elected as village heads. She has two sons and a daughter from her marriage to Shyam Charan Murmu. Tragically, though, she passed away within four years along with her husband and two sons.

Academic career of Droupadi Murmu :

Droupadi Murmu began her career in education as a school teacher before going into politics. At the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute in Rairangpur, she later worked as an assistant professor. Additionally, she was given a position as a junior assistant in the irrigation division of the state of Odisha.

Electoral Life of Droupadi Murmu :

Droupadi Murmu joined the BJP in 1997 and was elected to the Rairangpur Municipal Council as a councilor. She was elected chair of the Rairangpur Municipal Council in 2000. She served as the BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha’s National Vice-President. She served as State Minister for Commerce and Transport during the BJD-BJP coalition government’s tenure from March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002, and then as Minister for Fisheries and Animal Resource Development until May 16, 2004. She represented Odisha’s Rairangpur constituency in the Legislative Assembly from 2000 to 2004 while serving as a Cabinet Minister.

Honors and Awards

The Nilakanth Award for Best Legislator was given to Droupadi Murmu by the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2007.

Droupadi Murmu, the state of Jharkhand’s first female governor, took the oath of office on May 9, 2015. Additionally, she was the first female tribal chief elected governor of an Indian state.

A measure passed by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly in 2017 that aimed to change the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act of 1949 and the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act of 1908 was rejected by Droupadi Murmu, the governor of Jharkhand. The bill’s goal was to give indigenous groups commercial rights while preserving property ownership and restricting land use. Droupadi Murmu asked clarity on the modifications made by the BJP-led administration under Raghuvardas that benefited the tribal communities.

Droupadi Murmu was chosen by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in June 2022 to represent the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2022 presidential election. She traveled to different states as part of her presidential campaign to lobby BJP MPs and representatives from other opposition parties to support her bid. She paid visits to numerous significant opposition groups in several eastern states, including JMM in Jharkhand, BJD in Odisha, Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, BSP in Uttar Pradesh, and JDS in Karnataka.
