The Durand Cup final between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan will take place on Sunday at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. Both teams will try to score in the second half after the first half ended scoreless. Their long-running rivalry in Indian football history will gain new depth with the title match, also known as the Kolkata Derby.
East Bengal ended their eight-game losing streak by defeating Mohun Bagan 1-0 during the group stage of the competition. On Saturday at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata, rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC will square off in the Kolkata Derby final, hoping to add another Durand Cup trophy to their famous collection.
With a combined total of 16 titles won, Mohun Bagan SG and East Bengal FC are the two most successful teams in Durand Cup history. The previous Kolkata Derby final was in 2004, therefore it will be 19 years before they square off in the Durand Cup final. East Bengal FC tied Delhi’s 16 championships in that match by winning 2-1 at the Ambedkar Stadium.
For the first time since 2010, both teams will compete in a major tournament’s championship game. In the 2010 Federation Cup final, East Bengal FC defeated Mohun Bagan 1-0. While Mohun Bagan SG will play in their third Durand Cup final in 19 years, this will be the first Durand Cup final for East Bengal FC. In their last two attempts, they were unsuccessful, falling to Churchill Brothers in 2009 and Gokulam Kerala FC in 2019.
Both teams will play each other twice in the current season after being drawn in Group E with fellow ISL teams Punjab FC and Bangladesh Army Football Team. East Bengal FC won the Kolkata Derby for the first time in four years with a convincing 1-0 victory against Mariners in the group stage.
As group champions, Carlos Cuadrat’s group ran consistently throughout the group stages to earn their spot in the knockout rounds. After winning a penalty shootout against NorthEast United FC in the quarterfinals, they defeated I-League team Gokulam Kerala FC in the semifinals.
East Bengal FC head coach Carlos Cuadrat spoke to the media and highlighted the progress of his side before the pivotal match on Sunday. The Red and Gold Brigade is eager to put out their best effort and take home the coveted prize.
“We talked about team internal issues after the draw with the Bangladesh Army squad and got better in our workouts. Mohun Bagan Super Giant was defeated by us in the Derby. I’m pleased with our advancement, and it’s been a process,” said Cuadrat.
“The club has a lot of new players, and among the foreigners, I’ve only ever worked with Clinton Silva. The process is only just getting started. Really, it’s a mixed bag, but it’s for both teams, and we’re ready to play. It has been a while since East Bengal defeated Mohun Bagan in consecutive games, which happened in 2016. To try and win the trophy this time, we want to give it our all.
The second-place squad in Group A, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, on the other hand, advanced to the quarterfinals as one of the top two teams. After defeating 2022 champions Mumbai City FC, they faced East Bengal FC in the semifinals.
As his club prepares to play East Bengal FC in the championship game on Sunday, Mohun Bagan Super Giant head coach Juan Ferrando must now overcome another challenge.
“I am pleased with how I have been doing so far. We competed against some top teams, including FC Goa and Mumbai City FC. And in the championship game, we will now face a different strong team. Therefore, it would be great if we could take home the trophy. I am pleased with how things are going for us at this point in the preseason.
The past has passed. Each game is unique. In all honesty, I was more focused on the AFC Cup game during the previous Derby. But now that my players have advanced to the knockout rounds, I am pleased. Additionally, we will play a strong team on Sunday. It’s a nice objective for us and a terrific task. The trophy will be our goal, Ferrando declared.
