Akshay Kumar was born into a Punjabi Hindu household to Hari Om Bhatia (later Brijmohan Bhatia) and Aruna Bhatia in Amritsar, Punjab, India. His father served in the military. Kumar developed a strong interest in sports at a young age. His father was an avid wrestler as well. As soon as his father left the military to work as an accountant for UNICEF, they left Chandni Chowk, Delhi, and eventually relocated to Mumbai. Akshay’s sister was born shortly after, and the family moved to the Koliwada neighborhood in central Mumbai.

He studied karate while finishing his education at Don Bosco High School in Matunga. He attended Guru Nanak Khalsa College to further his schooling but left early due to a lack of enthusiasm for the subject matter. When he told his father that he wanted to pursue martial arts, the latter set aside funds to send him to Thailand for training. Akshay lived in Thailand for five years, where he worked as a chef and waiter while studying Muay Thai.

He worked in a variety of occupations after arriving back in India, including modeling, before breaking into the entertainment business. He started out performing in films as a background dancer. He once made more money in the first two days than his full month’s salary when assisting photographer Jayesh Sheth for his first portfolio shot. This inspired him to pursue a modeling career. He provided Jayesh Sheth with unpaid assistance for 18 months while also making multiple film appearances as a background dancer.

Akshay was given the idea to try modeling by a parent of one of his kids who was in charge of organizing modeling assignments. His first modeling gig for a furniture showroom resulted from this. Akshay decided to pursue a career in modeling after earning more money in those two days than he did in a month working at his prior jobs. For his first portfolio session, he later agreed to work with photographer Jayesh Sheth.

Producer Pramod Chakravarthy noticed him during this time and hired him for the lead part in the movie “Deedar.”
