Officials report that 140 people have died as a result of the November 3 earthquake in Nepal, which had a magnitude of 6.4 and cut out contact in several places. There were many more injuries.
There is concern that the number of fatalities may increase. Property and infrastructure have also sustained extensive damage as a result of the earthquake.
The earthquake that occurred last night was responsible for 159 aftershocks, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
The Nepal Army and Nepal Police have been requested to assist in the search and rescue operations. A few rescue routes were hampered by landslides brought on by the earthquake and its aftershocks.
The earthquake had an epicentre of 10 km deep in Nepal with a Richter scale value of 6.4, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
In addition to expressing sympathy for the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is in solidarity with Nepal and will offer all necessary assistance. “Profoundly apologetic for the tragic consequences of the earthquake that struck Nepal, India is fully committed to extending every possible assistance to the Nepalese community, with whom it stands in solidarity. We send our condolences to the relatives of the departed and hope the injured get well soon,” he tweeted on X Saturday.
India has given its citizens in Nepal an emergency contact number, +977-9851316807, in response to the recent earthquake that rocked the Himalayan nation.
There were powerful vibrations in Delhi and northern India following the earthquake in Nepal. Numerous districts, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi-NCR, were also affected by the earthquakes.
Feeling the tremors, a large number of people in Delhi and northern India hurried out of their homes late on Friday night. The tremors were loud enough to rattle windows and shake buildings.
Concurrently, on Saturday morning, Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and a medical team visited the earthquake-affected area. “Honourable Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” has mobilised all three security agencies for the immediate rescue and relief of the injured and has expressed his deep sorrow over the human and material damage caused by the earthquake at Ramidanda in Jajarkot at 11:47 on Friday night,” the Nepal PMO had earlier posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The earthquake that struck Nepal on Friday was the second to register a magnitude of greater than six in the nation in the previous month. The nation was struck by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake on October 2.
Concerns have been raised concerning Nepal’s seismic activity by the two earthquakes. The nation is prone to earthquakes due to its location in a geologically active region.
Notably, the country’s mountains frequently experience earthquakes; the most recent significant event happened in 2015 and claimed 9,000 lives. In addition to entire cities and over a million buildings being levelled, the 2015 Nepal earthquake also devastated local historical landmarks and temples, according to Reuters. It further stated that the disaster cost the Nepali economy $6 billion.
According to the research, the deadliest earthquake that had occurred before 2015 was that of 1934, which killed at least 8,519 people in Nepal and left more dead in India.
This time around, the earthquake’s effects were felt in the Delhi-NCR as well as in a number of other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) earlier on October 15, following similar shocks on October 3.
